HEADSHOT SESSION PREP
DOS Approach your photo session as you would a job interview or big audition, where the goal is to present you at your very best! Get plenty of rest the night before. This will put you in the right frame of mind as well as minimize any eye baggage. You have invested in yourself by choosing us, so do what you can to be well rested. Brush your teeth prior to the session – the camera doesn’t want to see what you had for lunch, but more importantly, this will keep your mouth feeling fresh which in turn will allow more of a natural smile to emerge. Come into your session with an open mind, ready to have a good time. Everyone at Chris Hietikko Photography has one goal in mind and that is to make you look confident and strong. So, relax but expect to have fun while creating that powerful headshot. Drink lots of water the week prior to your photo session as this helps your skin and eyes look their healthiest. Pack your clothes and personal items into a bag the evening before so that the morning of your session can be relaxed. This is about celebrating your confidence and setting yourself up to succeed to get strong images. So, do everything you can to prep in advance. Follow the number one rule of choosing wardrobe - wear something that you love and makes you feel confident!! Don’t be afraid to bring a range of options but just make sure everything is clean and ironed. Fear not, our studio has a steamer and lint roller for any last little touch-ups before the first shutter click. Think about choosing solid colors that don’t have small or distracting patterns. You should be the star of the image, not your shirt. Come to your session with your hair washed and styled as you would wear it to an audition or big interview. Please feel free to bring your own combs, brushes and products - just try to avoid anything with extra sheen. Make sure your clothes fit properly, especially if wearing a suit jacket. Bring a small selection of ties and double check your shirt collars to ensure they are crisp and clean. Remember your collar stays! If you want a clean shaven look – shave as close to your session time as possible, use a fresh blade, and moisturize after. If you have a scruff or a beard, don’t forget to trim those fly away hairs. A little nosehair and eyebrow trim may also be beneficial. While not a requirement, we do suggest having your makeup professionally applied if possible. Let us know prior to your session if you would like guidance in arranging a hair and make-up artist to join us. Feel free to bring your own stylist to your session. Please just let us know, and any compensation for their talents are between you two. Follow these tips when applying your own makeup. It’s always best to keep it natural – don’t distract from your best features. • Powder foundations are not as photo friendly as liquid foundations. • Try to avoid products with sunscreens as they tend to reflect oddly under the lighting. • No one needs harsh lines, so use a soft eyeliner. |
DON’TS Don’t stress out!!! You have chosen a professional photographer for a reason, and you can trust that together we will achieve two things - some amazing images where you look your confident best, and a fun time creating together. Don’t overdue the sun exposure! Too much sun can make your skin look blotchy, tired and irritated. Don’t bring in your colored contacts, we promise your eyes will look naturally amazing. Don’t overdo the make-up. Don’t overdo your eyebrows, keep them natural. Leave your big statement jewelry at home. Items that look great in person often are distracting in photos. You should be the star rather than any accessories. Less is more. Don’t wear distracting clothes that have words or logos. Don’t wear clothes that make you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. Don’t get a haircut for at least three days prior to your photo session as it takes a little time for a new haircut to settle. Have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the studio.
